Show Notes

The Berkshire Edge LLC is a locally owned, regional publication. Our goal is to provide – regularly and in depth – content that truly reflects the life, interests and aspirations of this unusually rich and vibrant community.

Guided by respected journalistic standards, the principle of fairness, the quest for truth, a commitment to social, economic and environmental justice, and an abiding admiration for the independent spirit of the Berkshires, The Berkshire Edge offers in-depth local news reports and features, perspectives on the arts, wide-ranging commentary, and a comprehensive calendar of events – all written, illustrated, and, in some cases performed, with wit, intelligence, insight and humor.

1. Let’s start with a mundane item… the (broken) bridges of Great Barrington town. Two of the six bridges that cross the Housatonic River — that bisects the town of Great Barrington — are now closed for repair. With a very major bridge — the U.S. Route 7 so-called Brown Bridge — needing an overhaul, as well. Deferred maintenance …  ir could cost the town $600,000 to fix the Division Street bridge.

2. The South (Berkshire) County Cable Advisory panel is requesting Massachusetts Atttorney Maura Healy to sue the FCC over new regulations that will jeopardize the financial well-being of local cable access channels:

3. And of course, we can’t go a week without a marijuana story. Residents of the hamlet of Housatonic are protesting a proposed cannabis growing complex proposed for an industrial zone that is across a road and railroad tracks from their property. They packed planning board and selectboard meetings to demand the project’s special permit be rejected. The planning board gave a thumbs up; selectboard is hestitating.

4. After a skateboarder got struck by a car in a crosswalk on Main Street in Great Barrington, Police Chief Bill Walsh promises stricter enforcement of speed limits:https://theberkshireedge.com/police-chief-announces-crackdown-on-road-scofflaws-including-speeders-and-skateboarders/

5.  On this coming Monday Berkshire Grown will be hosting its 21st annual Harvest Supper, at Ski Butternut in Great Barrington. Berkshire Grown is a countywide organization that supports sustainable agriculture — this annual festive meal is a celebration of the brilliance and hard work of the many farmers and chefs and restaurants in the Berkshires:https://theberkshireedge.com/celebrating-the-bounty-at-berkshire-growns-21st-annual-harvest-supper/

6.  And on Sunday, September 22, Construct Inc., the organization that shelters the homeless and those down on their luck or anyone needing emergency shelter, is holding its annual march — the 22nd annual march —  to raise money for the homeless. The walk starts at Ski Butternut and proceeds through Great Barrington. It’s an event that the community has really supported… hundreds, young and old, take part in the stroll that ends at the courthouse in Great Barrington where the American Revolution began.
