Show Notes

The Berkshire Edge LLC is a locally owned, regional publication. Our goal is to provide – regularly and in depth – content that truly reflects the life, interests and aspirations of this unusually rich and vibrant community.

Guided by respected journalistic standards, the principle of fairness, the quest for truth, a commitment to social, economic and environmental justice, and an abiding admiration for the independent spirit of the Berkshires, The Berkshire Edge offers in-depth local news reports and features, perspectives on the arts, wide-ranging commentary, and a comprehensive calendar of events – all written, illustrated, and, in some cases performed, with wit, intelligence, insight and humor.

Chief Medical examiner in Massachusetts issued a report on the grisly murder and suicide in Sheffield last year in which five people died. It was determined that Luke Karpinski murdered his wife and three children before killing himself by burning down his house:

2.  Meanwhile, On a thoroughly different topic, this coming Monday — Feb. 10 — Construct Inc. is holding its Warm up the Winter concert, with an all-star cast of musicians to raise money for fuel assistance in the southern Berkshires — Construct provides shelter and housing for the homeless and the poor.

3.  And while we’re on the topic, we’ve been running a series on “affordable housing” — that is, housing that people of modest means can afford. Our hosts for the series are Selectboard member Ed Abrahams and his sidekick Pedro Pachano.. their guest on their show was June Wolfe, housing director for Construct Inc.

4. Now here’s a topic dear to my heart: restoring passenger rail service from New York City to the Berkshires, via the Housatonic line that drifts north from Canaan, Conn., and Torrington… Our columnist Carole Owens reminds us of what passenger travel used to be, with travelers debarking and embarking at the Stockbridge (Mass.) station:https://theberkshireedge.com/connections-73/

5.  A sign of the times, alas: The demise of village general stores that were the hub of a small community. The latest is the Mill River general store that closed last week:

6. Finally, Thursday night at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center journalist and author Rachel Louise Snyder will discuss her book “No Visible Bruises,” in a presentation about the prevalence of domestic violence .. her book was named one of the 10 best published in 2019.:
