Show Notes

The Berkshire Edge LLC is a locally owned, regional publication. Our goal is to provide – regularly and in depth – content that truly reflects the life, interests and aspirations of this unusually rich and vibrant community.

Guided by respected journalistic standards, the principle of fairness, the quest for truth, a commitment to social, economic and environmental justice, and an abiding admiration for the independent spirit of the Berkshires, The Berkshire Edge offers in-depth local news reports and features, perspectives on the arts, wide-ranging commentary, and a comprehensive calendar of events – all written, illustrated, and, in some cases performed, with wit, intelligence, insight and humor.

This week we talk about:

1.  Great Barrington is in line to receive state funding for a “complete streets” project, whereby bike lanes, traffic monitoring devices, and pedestrian crosswalks are installed in the interest of making the streets accessible and safe for bikes — not just cars…

2.  A collaboration of north and south:

Berkshire Hills Regional School District, a sprawling rural district, is joining with Pittsfield Schools, an urban environment, in challenging the state’s formula for funding public schools. Basically, the two school districts claim that the formula determining the amount of aid a district receives is unrealistic and unfair.

3.  Now here’s an interesting development. Second home owners are in revolt against rules that prevent them from voting at town meetings. It’s taxation without representation, fumes a group of disgruntled second-home owners in Stockbridge. And they have a point there. 54 precent of the real estate is own by second-homeers….

4.   Andrea Harrington, surprise surprise, won the Democratic primary for District Attorney, in voting last week.

5.  And in case we didn’t mention it, not every merchant in Great Barrington is against the ban on single-use water bottles.  And few have seen this as an opportunity to draw customers (and good will):
