This week we talk about:

1. Often, local issues mirror the national debate. Take, for instance, one of the petitions before the Annual Town Meeting in Great Barrington, May 14.

At the upcoming annual town meeting in Great Barrington, a citizens’ petition is calling for the ban of single-use plastic water bottles — citing the damage these bottles do to the environment;

But now comes the chairman of the Republican Town Committee, claiming this petition would incur too much of a burden:

2. Berkshire Country Day School joined the national student walkout, protesting gun violence and the NRA, walking 3 miles from their campus to Lenox. So far in 2018, there have been 20 school shootings, an average of 1.25 per week. Simon’s Rock students also marched in Great Barrington, from the Mason Library to Town Hall.

3. Now the Berkshire Board of Realtors has suddenly gotten behind the Train Campaign, to restore rail service between New York City and the Berkshires… in this case, Pittsfield. A letter to the editor from the president and CEO of the realty board has endorsed this plan, being studied by MassDOT.

4. Find those historical markers: historian Bernard Drew challenges local history buffs to find a set of markers that celebrate people and events… often etched into rock faces…
